What is #FBrape?

Last week, Women, Action and the Media (WAM), in partnership with other feminist and media organizations wrote a letter and launched a campaign that exploded across the feminist Twittersphere. The group created the hashtag #FBrape to pressure Facebook into recognizing gender-based hate speech as, well, hate speech.

So what exactly is the problem? Well, currently, images such as this

are recognized by Facebook as “humor” despite objections raised by feminist organizations. Facebook has been known to quickly destroy images of women breastfeeding – yet the company continues to insist that these (sexually) violent images are simply humor, and not hate speech.

WAM responded to this more than inadequate response by launching the #FBrape campaign. As of Sunday, over 43,000 tweets and 4,000 emails had been sent to companies with ads that appear beside some of these graphic images.
